The biggest accolade we can give at a community football club, especially one of our size, is a life membership. Each year a life member board work to nominate members, and their nominations come to the AGM to pass, and the award is presented at the next years Chairman’s Lunch.
We would like to present to you our newest life member inductee, Sue Johnson.
Sue’s association with the Mount Lofty Football Club started with brothers Grant and Tim Brooks who both played for Stirling Football Club.
Sue helped her Mother (Elizabeth) on the canteen at Stirling Oval, and this was the beginning of her canteen volunteer experience!
With the merger with Heathfield Aldgate United to become Mt Lofty, I used to help out behind the bar back in the days when there were kegs and beer taps!
She met a newcomer to the area, a young Tony Johnson and signed him up to play for Devils
Sons Tom and Ben started playing in the late 90’s. With the assistance of many other parents, we enjoyed helping on the BBQ at Stirling Oval.
Tony started coaching the U13’s in 2006, and Sue helped in the canteen and eventually taking over running the canteen from Carol Graham, in 2009 for a further 6 years.
The scouring of catalogues for weekly specials of Cans of Coke, Powerade and chocolates were all part of the fun.
Numerous visits to Campbells Cash ‘n Carry for Sour straps, Giant Snakes, Hubba Bubba and Chuppa Chups!!
The Canteen became popular for it’s delicious but not so healthy food – including Tony’s popular toasted Hot dogs- verified by Sarah Bennet!
Working alongside The Hone family, the Stewarts and Zampa’s in the BBQ and kitchen we had so many wonderful members and their families volunteering.
Apart from fun, the canteen was the best view of the Footy on a cold wet day!
Sue spent many cold days armed with the Sony Camcorder videoing the games from junior colts to A Grade.
Ladies Day events were put together with a group of wonderful girls including Sally Arnoul, Julie Stenklev, Sarah Carthew, Gill May and Mary Read.
Over the years these successful luncheons, which involved themed lunches like “A touch of Bollywood” Indian food, Spanish tapas and Paella , followed by the fashion parade with models like Pam Broadbridge and some of the ‘B Grade’ boys strutting their stuff on the catwalk. The Silent Auction held on the day raised valuable funds for the club.
Sue also assisted Ian and Mary Deans, with the Chairman’s Lunch by organising the donations and running the Silent Auctions on the day.
Sue was approached by Buzz Gray to take over the running of The ‘100 club. It was always a challenge to sell the 100 tickets.
Marlon Coates came on board and with his help transformed the very manual process to a more automated operation.
The past two years Rob Sampson and Megan Billerwell have made the promotion and sale of tickets through ‘square and online payment system much more efficient and easier to manage.
Sue was awarded the Frank Clements Senior Club Person Award.
During her time at the Club, Sue served for four years as a committee member for the Football Club Committee.
Amazing work Sue, and congratulations on your achievements.
