We would like to thank Allan Miller who is a Life Member of our Heritage Club; Stirling, as did us the honour of tossing the commemorative Life Member coin for our match against Hahndorf on Saturday 22 July 2023.
Allan’s early years of football were certainly different to the way young people enter the game at such young ages these days with Hill’s clubs not having colts of any age group until the late 1950’s.
His career started as a teenager at Goodwood Tech where he said a real highlight for the school was defeating the visiting Collingwood Tech – nothing like the interstate rivalry. On leaving school, he joined South Adelaide Colts playing from 1948 to 1950 and played Reserves in the last minor round game of 1950 for a place in the finals. Travelling to Glenelg for the match he had to catch the bus to the city and then on the tram to the Bay and training with the club always saw him not return home, by train, until 10.00pm. Even though Allan had been added to the Senior League Squad at South, no assistance to travel to or from was forthcoming and so he joined Stirling, where he had been born and had lived his entire life until then.
What a decision that turned out to be, where he and his teammates became members of a select group, like Heathfield Aldgate United players, who played in consecutive A Grade Premierships over extended periods. Allan played in 6 Premierships in 9 seasons, including 4 in a row from 1952 to 1955. Two more Premierships in 1957 and 1960 was an incredible club performance and he played on until 1964.
The skilled two-sided player spent a few years at Half Forward and Full Forward until teammate Ray “Skully” Williams missed a few matches after an unfortunate report requiring Allan to move to Centre Half Back where he stayed for a few seasons, until returning to the forward line for the last years of his career. Obviously a versatile player, Allan was also a regular Lovelock Shield representative over quite a few years.
His sporting career was very impressive, including 3 League matches with Norwood in 1959, a member of A Grade Premiership sides with Stirling Cricket Club and 56 years of golf, only retiring from the game when Covid hit 3 years ago.
A Life Member of Stirling Football Club and Mt Lofty Football Club, he became a member of a special 4-person committee which managed the difficult job of bringing Heathfield Aldgate United and Stirling together to form Mt Lofty District Football Club and enter the new and progressive SAFA competition in the city. During this time, he was very grateful to his wife Janet who carried out secretarial duties at a time when the administrative load was heavy for the fledgling club. During his three years on the Mt Lofty Board Allan did get to see his son David, who had played for Stirling juniors, wear the red and white but unfortunately, serious injury saw an early retirement from the Devils.
Allan was a Stirling resident for nearly 70 years until he and Janet moved to retirement accommodation in Happy Valley.
Thanks for everything Allan!

It is with great sadness that we advise of the passing of Krista Foale.
Krista attended Heathfield High School alongside several Mt Lofty club members and was heavily involved with the Heathfield Netball Club. Krista’s husband Malcolm (known as Fuji or Mal) and son Jack, both played for Mt Lofty. Malcolm joined Mt Lofty as a junior in 1967 and played until 1987. Jack began as an Auskicker and played until Under 15s when he made the difficult decision to retire.
Krista was a Life Member of the Heathfield Netball Club and contributed much to the club, including as a committee member for 12 years, umpiring, coaching and running the canteen for several years. These details are contained in a beautiful post to the Netball Club’s Facebook page, which also noted “Krista’s happy disposition and effervescent personality will be missed by her many friends at the club”.
The Lofty Legends Group and The Mt Lofty District Football Club express our sincere condolences to Malcolm (Fuji), Eloise, Maddi and Jack. The thoughts of the club are with Krista’s family and friends at this difficult time.
Our much-loved Heathfield Aldgate United Life Member and Number One Ticket Holder of the Lofty Legends Group, Jack Hampton, passed away this week at age 99.
Jack has battled ill health for several years and with the wonderful support of his family, he remained in the family home which he and Joyce built on Longwood Road Heathfield in the early 1950’s, at which time he decided that he should play with the local club and transferred from Stirling to Heathfield.
The amalgamation with Aldgate saw Jack become a key person in the Heathfield Aldgate United Football Club. His service to football in the Hills saw him as a Premiership player, Premiership Coach and an official who took on so many roles, including the ceiling installation in the old change rooms as well as many other tasks required when the Heathfield Oval was constructed. The dedication to the club which he showed, along with Joyce, set the way for his family where both Lorraine, who was sadly lost almost two years ago, and Kevin, were both made Life Members of the Mt Lofty District Football Club. Seven Grandsons have since played for Mt Lofty with Josh Healey now a Premiership Player after another win in last year’s B Grade side.

We extend our sincere condolences to Joyce and their children Margaret, Kevin, Sharyn and Robyn and families and Lorraine’s family.

We were sadly advised of the passing of Margaret Clements recently who was a dedicated volunteer with the Heathfield Aldgate United Football Club. Margaret was the incredibly supportive wife of Frank, a past Mt Lofty Chairman and Life Member of both Heathfield Aldgate and Mt Lofty Football Clubs and mother of 6 children and their families including Mt Lofty Life Member, Paul who was President during the Triple A Grade Mt Lofty Premiership sides of 2006 to 2008.
Margaret’s family has been synonymous with the Aldgate, Heathfield Aldgate United and Mt Lofty Football Clubs where she was always a significant support to the family which played such a large role in the three clubs, spanning over 4 decades.
With Frank’s heavy involvement, daughter Lyn relates that Margaret eventually decided “if you cant beat ‘em’, join ‘em” which saw her host selection meetings, work in the canteen, making sure young players were provided with a decent meal, (especially with what became known as “Marg burgers”) and washing countless footy jumpers and hanging them in numerical order (even doing that again in her 70’s when Paul was President). Lyn adds “…yes OCD runs so deep in the family that we call it CDO as of course it must be in alphabetical order J There was one occasion when a shower of rain came over, so Margs dashed to the line, grabbed dry jumpers, and then rehung the still damp ones, again in numerical order. Once they were all dry and folded, in numerical order ready for game day, Margs was beside herself as there was one missing! When she gave Frank this information, he asked her which one and promptly started laughing when she told him the number…..apparently this was the jumper of one of the neighbours who had obviously jumped the fence to grab his jumper, not to mention to do Margaret’s head in!”
We will always remember Margaret with her wonderful disposition, a friendly manner, and who amazingly juggled a large family with her career as a nurse. After some years of ill health, she passed away last Friday, but while her family are in mourning, they are relieved that their very much-loved Mother is now at peace.
We extend our sincere condolences to Lynette, Richard, Debra, Heather, Andrew and Paul and their families.
Notice of Margaret’s passing appeared in 14 June Courier.

We were proud to be joined at Arkaba Oval this week, by Richard ‘Dicky’ Symons, to do us the honour of tossing the commemorative Life Member coin for our match against Mt Barker.
Richard Symons who is a Life Member of one our Heritage Club’s, Heathfield Aldgate United Football Club, known affectionately over the years as “Dicky” was is excited to by joined on the oval his grandsons from Mt Barker FC, Alex playing and Jordan as runner, with wife Betty watching from the stands.
Dicky played some footy at Plympton High School but until he met his now wife, Betty, at work in 1968, he had not considered playing until she told him of the Heathfield Aldgate United Football Club of which her late father Sid Magor also became a Life Member. Until then he had been happy to follow the Sturt Football Club which was in its run of 5 successive Premierships. What a resumption of a career it was, with Dicky playing on the wing in the first of 7 B Grade Premierships and in his very first year.
Not many people can claim to have played in so many Premierships, but his record is even more impressive with an eighth GF win and not one loss. This followed the rare feet of playing in two Premierships within one week where he played in a C Grade Premiership and then, the next Saturday, backed that up with another B Grade Premiership. Over the years Dicky both Captained and Coached the B Grade, winning the 1977 and 1978 Premierships as coach, the 1978 success being the last of HAU’s 30 Premierships.
An amazing career for sure, but Dicky jokingly refers to his record at A Grade level as well, where he has a 100% disposal record – one game, one kick and one goal on Coach Warren “Sherg” Foster putting him on the ground late in the match when there was no interchange.
Like quite a few of their close HAU friends, Dicky and Betty were very active Committee members and Dicky went on to become a key member of a four-person subcommittee which undertook the myriad of tasks required to set up the Mount Lofty club between 1978 and 1979. He relates the legendary story that the Devils would have been the Hawks, had it not been for the fact that the then SAFA competition which it joined, already had a club with the colours of brown and yellow.
Dicky and Betty’s work with Mt Lofty came to an end after Dicky’s career in finance took him to Darwin and later Mt Gambier, before eventually returning to the Adelaide Hills as a resident of Mt Barker. He is long retired, but is still a very active lawn bowler and volunteer and is a proud follower of his two Grandson’s, Jordan and Alex Houlahan, playing with Mt Barker. Alex will shortly take his position with Mt Barker in this important game, while Jordan, who was drafted by Essendon in 2017, is unfortunately recovering from shoulder surgery.
Thank you for everything Dicky, to our clubs, and in the community.
