New rules for Moddies

New rules for Moddies

There have been some rule changes for our moddies (U8-U11). The HFL have embraced the AFL recommendations for modified footy (introduced in 2014) and highlights include:

  • U8 and U9 now have zoning: 3 equal zones to give more kids a go and to keep the game more open.
  • U8: no stealing, bumping, tackling, shepherding (to give players maximum opportunity to dispose of the football).
  • U9-U10: no bumping

This video shows modified tackling and it also describes the rationale behind introducing the more physical side of footy in a way that allows for the development of the foundation skills by new players to the game.

Full rules are on our website: Resources > Rules > HFL. So why not learn them before you say “F…” at the umpires from the sidelines! And instead of saying ‘F…’, think about saying ‘Fair enough’ to support our umpires.

Last touch rule explained

Last touch rule explained

In 2021, all teams (HFL and SANFL) are using the last touch rule.

The interpretation of the rule is as follows:

  • A free kick shall be awarded against a player who kicks or handballs the football and it goes over the boundary line without the football being touched by another player.

The rule is being introduced for the following reasons:

  • It provides clear and concise interpretations without the grey areas of “What is deliberate?”
  • It allows us to allocate 3 boundary umpires on large grounds as it requires less throwing in.
  • It aligns us with SFL, GSFL, RML, SANFL and most South Australian country leagues which makes events like Association and Country Carnivals more consistent in interpretation.
  • It allows for more flow in the game and less throw ins hence quicker more attractive football.
  • It helps us with recruiting new boundary umpires.

See this video for further explanation.

MICHELLE TURNER MEMORIAL TROPHY

This week the Senior Colts Iron Raiders vs Mt Lofty match will see the return of the Michelle Turner Trophy.

Michelle was a dedicated volunteer to both Mt Lofty FC and Ironbank Cherry. Gardens over many years and was much-loved member of our football community. Outside of football, Prof. Michelle Lane was an extremely accomplished and respected leader in her field and research community, through both Repromed and the University of Adelaide.

The much-loved wife of Glen Turner, who has also had a deep association with both clubs, and beloved mother of Jack and Will, both long term Devil’s players. Michelle was a passionate and beautiful human who is sorely missed from many communities.

A wonderful tradition to start in her honour last year.
